Why do my brakes squeal?
Squealing brakes are often a built-in wear warning, but not always.
Most likely causes
- Worn brake pads. A metal tab squeals when pads are low.
- Glazed pads or rotors. From heavy braking or overheating.
- Moisture or dust. Squeal in the morning that goes away is usually harmless.
Simple things to check
- Look through the wheel at pad thickness
- Notice if it happens only first thing in the morning
When to stop driving
Grinding metal means the pads are gone — stop driving and get it repaired.
