Why does my car click but not start?
A clicking sound when you turn the key usually means the starter isn't getting enough power.
Most likely causes
- Weak or dead battery. Rapid clicking is the classic sign.
- Loose or corroded battery cables. White or green crust on the terminals blocks power.
- Failing starter. A single loud click with good battery power points to the starter.
- Bad alternator. If the battery keeps dying, the alternator may not be charging it.
Simple things to check
- Turn on the headlights — dim lights mean a weak battery
- Look at the battery terminals for corrosion
- Try a jump start
When to stop driving
Never jump a battery that is cracked, leaking, or swollen.
